Crochet shoulder totes made from cotton cord
Large crochet shoulder totes, handmade from cotton cord. These are bags for shopping, the beach and whole days out: the base and body hold their form, and the handles are long enough to sling over your shoulder even when you're wearing a jacket. I make every tote by hand to order, from the first stitch to the last – in the colour of your choice. You'll find smaller designs for your phone and wallet in the Handbags category.

What's the difference between a crochet tote and a crochet handbag?
The main difference between a crochet tote and a crochet handbag is size and purpose. A tote is a large bag with two shoulder handles, for shopping and full days out. A handbag is a small bag on a long strap, for your phone, wallet and keys. I crochet both by hand from cotton cord.
The Ecru Tote – what you should know
- Material and stitch: cotton cord, vertical-stripe stitch with openwork panels at the sides.
- Shape: the base and body are made so the bag stands up on its own when set down.
- Handles: two, long enough to carry the bag on your shoulder even over a jacket.
- Lining: none, so the bag is light – but small items are best kept in a pouch.

Does a light-coloured crochet tote get dirty quickly?
Ecru gets dirty more slowly than its light shade suggests, because the texture of the stitch hides small marks better than smooth fabric. Still, a light bag set down on a wet pavement will pick up dirt faster than a dark one. Remove stains by spot-cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap – no machine washing. Frequently asked questions
Is a crochet tote suitable for shopping?
Yes. The Ecru Tote is designed as a bag for shopping, the beach and whole days out. It has two shoulder handles, and the base and body hold their form so the bag stands up on its own. Very heavy shopping carried every day can stretch any stitched fabric over time, so it's best not to overload it.
Do small items fall through the stitches of an openwork tote?
The Ecru Tote is unlined, and in the openwork sections the gaps between stitches are larger than in a dense stitch. Keys, lipstick or coins are best kept in a small pouch – that way nothing slips through.
Can a cord tote go in the washing machine?
No. Machine washing makes cotton cord lose its springiness and the bag lose its shape. Spot-clean the tote with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it flat, stuffed with paper, away from radiators.
