Handmade crochet bags made from cotton cord

Molaczka crochet bags are handmade from cord, stitch by stitch, in my studio in Bolesławiec. They're small day bags: they hold a phone, a wallet and keys, have either a snap-fastening flap or a round shape, and come with a shoulder strap. Bags in stock ship right away, and I can also make any design in your colour – in about 2 weeks. If you're looking for a larger bag for shopping, take a look at the Tote Bags category.

What is a crochet cord bag?

A crochet cord bag is a bag crocheted by hand from thick cotton cord, without seams joining cut-out pieces. Cord is thicker, denser and more resilient than ordinary yarn, so it holds its shape well. At Molaczka, every bag is made entirely by one person's hands, from the base to the clasp.

How to choose a crochet bag

When choosing a crochet bag, three things matter most: what you'll carry in it, how you want to wear it, and which colour suits your wardrobe. The small bags in this category are designed for a phone, wallet and keys – not a laptop or your shopping. For heavier loads, a crochet tote is the better choice.

  • How to wear it: a fixed long strap (Raspberry, Bottle Green) or a detachable one on snap hooks (Peach, Grey).
  • Fastening: a flap with a clasp you open with a flick of your thumb, or a round shape.
  • Colour: darker shades such as bottle green show minor marks less than light ones.

Does a cord bag stretch?

Any stitched fabric, crocheted or knitted, will stretch a little over time under heavy, constant weight. That's a property of a material made of stitches, not a flaw in a particular bag. What keeps the shape: a dense stitch, a carefully made base and body, and a strap crocheted from the same cord. It also helps not to overload the bag or leave it hanging by the strap for long periods. I go into more detail in my guide on whether crochet bags stretch and how to care for them.

An unlined bag – what it means in practice

My bags are unlined. There are always small gaps between the stitches, so hair clips, coins or lipstick are best carried in a little pouch. Having no lining has its advantages too: the bag is lighter, dries faster, and there's nothing inside that can shrink or fade.

How to care for a crochet bag

  1. Spot-clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, dabbing rather than rubbing.
  2. Don't machine wash – the cord loses its springiness and the bag loses its shape.
  3. Dry flat, stuffed with paper, away from radiators and strong sunlight.
  4. Store it stuffed with soft paper so the flap keeps its line.

Handmade bag vs. high-street bag

The key differences are how it's made and how many are made. A Molaczka bag is created stitch by stitch by one pair of hands, without machines, as a one-off or in just two pieces – and once sold, it disappears from the shop. You also have direct contact with the person who made it. You can read how a bag is made and what goes into its price in my post on how long it takes to crochet a bag.

Frequently asked questions

What fits in a small crochet bag?

The Raspberry and Bottle Green bags are designed as day bags: they hold a phone, a wallet and keys. They're not meant for a laptop, a water bottle and shopping all at once, because constant heavy weight stretches any stitched fabric. If you need something roomier, a large crochet shoulder tote such as the Ecru Tote will serve you better.

Can a cord bag go in the washing machine?

No. After a machine wash, cotton cord loses its springiness and the bag loses its shape. Spot-clean the bag with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry it flat, stuffed with paper, away from radiators.

Is a crochet bag suitable for everyday use?

Yes, as long as you choose it to match what you carry. A small bag on a long strap works well in town: you wear it over your shoulder or cross-body and open the clasp in one movement. Rain won't ruin it, but it's best not to expose it to a downpour. If it gets wet, simply press out the water with a towel, stuff it with paper and dry it flat.

Are the bags lined?

No, Molaczka bags are unlined. This makes them lighter and quicker to dry. There are small gaps between the stitches, though, so small items such as hair clips, coins or lipstick are best carried in a pouch.

Can I order a bag from the shop in a different colour?

I can make selected bags from the shop in another colour, provided the right cord is available. Write to me before placing your order – I'll check the materials and whether the bag can be made. I usually reply within two working days.
